Vineyard

The vineyards are located in Anguix, Burgos, and have a rocky soil rich in clay and limestone. The plots are oriented north-south. The vines are on average 45 years old. The yield is 3.5 tons of grapes per hectare. A green harvest keeps yields under control.

Vinification

The meticulously selected grapes are hand-picked and transported in small 12 kg crates to the winery. Using gravity, the grapes are transferred into 50 to 100 hl tanks where fermentation is initiated with indigenous yeasts. Fermentation and maceration together last 15 days. The wine ages for 18 months in barrels of predominantly (80%) French oak, 30% of which are renewed annually.

Bodegas Los Astrales ontstond in zijn huidige vorm in 2000, toen de familie Romera de la Cruz besloot haar druiven niet langer aan andere producenten te verkopen. Als derde generatie wijnbouwers in het kleine landbouwdorp Anguix kenden ze hun wijngaarden door en door, maar voortaan wilden ze zelf hoogwaardige Ribera del Duero produceren. Voor de uitbouw van het domein kregen ze ondersteuning van Eduardo García, zoon van Mariano García, die dertig jaar lang als oenoloog bij het iconische Vega Sicilia werkte. Los Astrales begon met twaalf hectare wijngaarden en groeide ondertussen uit tot 29 hectare. Daarbij bleef de oorspronkelijke ambitie onveranderd: krachtige maar verfijnde wijnen maken waarin het karakter van Anguix duidelijk herkenbaar is.
