Vineyard

The grapes come from various plots totaling 170 hectares, planted with vines aged 18 to 30 years. The carbonate-rich soil consists of rounded pebbles embedded in sandy and calcareous clay. The vineyards are located in the Duero Valley, partly in the river's alluvial deposits and partly on low, developed terraces. A mix of grass and natural vegetation grows among the vines. Yields are limited to 2.5 tonnes per hectare. Organic viticulture is practiced, meaning no chemical products are used: here, wildlife and viticulture go hand in hand.

Winemaking

The picking only takes place during the cool morning hours. The grapes are gently crushed and then remain in contact with the juice for a short time. Only the free-run juice is used. This undergoes spontaneous fermentation by indigenous yeasts. The aging on fine lees takes place in French oak barrels.

De drijvende kracht achter Bodegas Menade is de familie Sanz. Sinds het begin van de 19e eeuw verbouwen ze wijn in Rueda. De 6e generatie wijnbouwers van deze familie is in 2005 met een nieuw project gestart: Bodegas Menade. Ze fungeerden hierbij als pioniers in de organische wijnbouw in Rueda. Het natuurlijke aspect is voor hen heel belangrijk en dit gaat verder dan enkel het wijngebeuren, het is een echte filosofie waarvan het ganse team op Bodegas Menade van doordrongen is. Er wordt maximaal gerecycleerd, de energieconsumptie zit op een minimaal niveau en zelfs het glas van de flessen is op een ecologische manier geproduceerd. Door hun grote succes is er wat financiële ruimte gecreëerd en dit wordt gebruikt om steun te bieden aan goede doelen en sociale projecten in hun streek. Maar ze kijken ook wat verder: ze hebben steun verleend na de verwoestende aardbeving in Haïti en ze helpen bij de stroomvoorziening in arme regio’s in Zuid-Amerika.
