Vineyard

This special wine is made in a 'Clarete' or 'Palhete' style, where white and red grapes are fermented together. Alcoholic fermentation starts spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in underground concrete tanks. After a gentle and controlled skin contact, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation. Unlike the rest of the line, this specific cuvée matures for 18 months in used French oak barrels. Bottling is done completely unfiltered and unfined to preserve its unique aromatic complexity.

Vinification

The grapes come from an extremely old field blend from a unique vineyard in Mêda at an altitude of no less than 650 meters. Here, centuries-old white and red grape varieties grow haphazardly on poor soil of schist and quartzite. The exceptional altitude ensures a very slow ripening process and remarkable aromatic intensity. The vineyard is maintained organically and biodynamically with deep respect for nature. The yield of these old vines is minimal, which results in a rare complexity and structure in the fruit.

In het noorden van Portugal slingert de Douro zich door een diep ingesneden landschap richting Atlantische Oceaan. De wijnregio bestaat uit Douro Superior, Cima Corgo en Baixo Corgo, drie subregio’s met elk een eigen klimaat en identiteit. Ooit zwom de elft, Alosa alosa, vanuit de oceaan de volledige rivier op. Dammen maakten die trektocht onmogelijk, maar de vis leeft voort in het logo van Mateus Nicolau de Almeida. Hij symboliseert zowel de onderlinge verbondenheid als de grote diversiteit van de Douro.
