Vineyard

The vineyards are located in the Duero Valley, partly in the alluvial deposits of the Duero River and partly on low-built terraces. The soil, rich in carbonates, consists of rounded pebbles embedded in sandy and calcareous clay. A mix of grass and natural vegetation grows between the vines. Winemaking is done organically, without the use of chemical products: fauna and viticulture go hand in hand here. Green harvesting is carried out to keep yields under control.

Winemaking

The harvesting of the grapes is done partly mechanically at night and partly manually during the day. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks starts spontaneously due to indigenous yeasts. This process is temperature-controlled and takes place between 18 and 22 °C. The tanks have different sizes so that the grapes can be placed together in one tank according to their soil properties. Clarification is done by means of bentonite. The wine undergoes cold stabilisation which occurs naturally. Ageing takes place on the lees. It is bottled filtered.

De drijvende kracht achter Bodegas Menade is de familie Sanz. Sinds het begin van de 19e eeuw verbouwen ze wijn in Rueda. De 6e generatie wijnbouwers van deze familie is in 2005 met een nieuw project gestart: Bodegas Menade. Ze fungeerden hierbij als pioniers in de organische wijnbouw in Rueda. Het natuurlijke aspect is voor hen heel belangrijk en dit gaat verder dan enkel het wijngebeuren, het is een echte filosofie waarvan het ganse team op Bodegas Menade van doordrongen is. Er wordt maximaal gerecycleerd, de energieconsumptie zit op een minimaal niveau en zelfs het glas van de flessen is op een ecologische manier geproduceerd. Door hun grote succes is er wat financiële ruimte gecreëerd en dit wordt gebruikt om steun te bieden aan goede doelen en sociale projecten in hun streek. Maar ze kijken ook wat verder: ze hebben steun verleend na de verwoestende aardbeving in Haïti en ze helpen bij de stroomvoorziening in arme regio’s in Zuid-Amerika.
