IXSIR’s plots are spread over a large area, ranging from Jezzine in the South to Batroun in the North. Between these locations, the vines grow on the most beautiful slopes of the Bekaa Valley, at altitudes between 400 and 1,800 meters above sea level, making them the highest vineyards in the Northern Hemisphere. The subsoil consists mainly of calcareous clay in plate formations, and the soil is very rocky and stony.

Winemaking

The hand-picked grapes are transported to the winery in small 18 kg crates, ensuring that the temperature of the grapes remains below 18 °C to preserve their freshness. The different grape varieties are vinified separately. Upon arrival at the estate, the grapes undergo direct pressing, followed by a 2-month fermentation in stainless steel tanks. This wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation and is bottled directly after fermentation.

IXSIR, een naam afgeleid van ‘elixir’, werd in 2008 opgericht door enkele Libanese families met een gedeelde passie voor wijn. Hun ambitie is om Libanon met kwaliteitswijnen opnieuw internationale uitstraling te geven. Dat sluit aan bij een traditie die duizenden jaren teruggaat: reeds rond 2600 v.Chr. werd vanuit deze regio wijn naar Egypte uitgevoerd. Na eeuwen van onderbrekingen door het Ottomaanse bewind en de Libanese burgeroorlog kent de wijnbouw er opnieuw een sterke groei. Terwijl veel domeinen zich op de Bekavallei richten, zoekt IXSIR bewust de hoger gelegen hellingen op.
