Vineyard

The vineyards of Mas Doix are located between 350 and 450 metres above sea level and have a rather steep incline. The typical slate soil is called "Licorella". The grapes come from very old Carignan vines planted in 1902. The yield is only 300 grams of grapes per vine.

Vinification

The grapes are hand-picked and transported in small 10 kg boxes to the winery, where they undergo a very strict selection. Maceration lasts a very long 4 to 5 weeks to ensure maximum extraction of aromas. Fermentation is temperature-controlled and is followed by 16 months of aging in 225-litre new French oak barrels. It is bottled unfiltered. Production is limited to only 864 numbered bottles.

Mas Doix ligt in Poboleda, in het koelere noorden van Priorat. Hoewel het huidige wijnhuis in 1998 werd opgericht door de broers Valentí en Ramon Llagostera, reiken de wijnwortels van de familie veel verder terug. Al in de negentiende eeuw verbouwde de familie Doix hier druiven en maakte ze wijn. Die vroege kwaliteit bleef niet onopgemerkt: Juan Extrems Doix behaalde een zilveren medaille op de Wereldtentoonstelling van Parijs in 1878 en goud in Barcelona in 1888. Kort daarna sloeg de druifluis genadeloos toe in Priorat. De verwoeste wijngaarden werden opnieuw aangeplant, onder meer met Cariñena in 1902 en Garnacha in 1903. Deze oude stokken overleefden de moeilijke decennia waarin grote delen van het platteland leegliepen en de druiven vooral aan de plaatselijke coöperatie werden verkocht. Eind jaren negentig besloten Valentí en Ramon Llagostera het familie-erfgoed opnieuw zelf een stem te geven. Met de oprichting van Mas Doix in 1998 begon een nieuw hoofdstuk, gebouwd rond dezelfde steile hellingen en oude wijnstokken die hun voorouders hadden verzorgd. Het doel is daarbij niet simpelweg krachtige Priorat maken, maar het landschap van Poboleda vertalen in wijnen met elegantie, frisheid en een duidelijke minerale spanning.
